Great news! Welcome back.
Hi everybody,
We're back to school!
Since all of us have got a message that wikispaces platform is going to close soon, I've moved Wiki TV to a blog.
There we can successfully wrap up Health Design Challenge.
Today my students have watched the final presentations and are going to post commens to them tomorrow and next week
They have also watched the 2 videos about global health issues and started posting their comments to them.
Global Health Issues
The next week is going to be the final summary of our fantastic health adventure.)

Health Design. Week 6
Nataliya_Byzova Feb 17, 2018
Hi everybody,
It's the end of week 5.
Colorado Academy students have created fantastic prototypes
and demonstrated them in the best manner.
But Troyeshchyna Gymnasium continues to be closed till February 22
because 24 per cent of the students are ill with the flu.
Some teachers have fallen ill too.
The three of us are fine, but without students.
So all of us are likely to wrap up the project at a different time.
Best wishes,
Nataliya

Hi Bill,
Thank you for the questions to the Global Health Issues videos you've added.
They are very good. Our students are sure to post their speculations
when they come back to school.
https://wikitv313.blogspot.com/p/global-health-issues.html
As for the flu, it seems to be everywhere. My friend from Chicago has written
that after snow storms they are expecting rain and the number of people with the flu and cold has increased.
Preventive measures are supposed to help and we hope to have the education process restored at the end of the next week.
Best wishes,
Nataliya

Hi All,
I am sorry to hear that the flu is still keeping so many students home. Please rest and get healthy that is most important.
We will be wrapping this up this week but the students will check the wiki once your students have returned so that they can correspond with them and share their thoughts.
All the best,
Bill

Health Design. Week 5

Greetings to everyone,
Four weeks of productive cooperation are behind us, and we are moving to the fifth, final week.
I feel so gratful to all of you for this amazing time.
When I look back over the past 4 weeks, I see that despite some language difficulties, the Ukrainian students have realized that their level of English allows them to search for information on any topic, find the main thing in it and generate their own ideas.
I've noticed a significant increase of motivation in performing tasks. I'm impressed by their drawing prototypes on the classroom board or showing them on their smart phones. Some students have greatly enjoyed creating google presentations sharing them with each other and working as a real team and finally filming videos. Exchanging information on Introduction pages has been a success, making collaboration with American students less formal.
Due to the lack of classes and as a result of influenza spread, not all pupils have fulfilled all the tasks but, in general, during this week the teams are ready to move on to the next stage, which is the discussion of the uploaded final video presentations.
Presentations. Teams № 1-10
https://wikitv313.blogspot.com/p/hdc-presentations-teams-1-10.html
Presentations. Teams № 11-20
https://wikitv313.blogspot.com/p/hdc-presentations-teams-11-20.html
Also, the students could answer global health problems questions, planned before as a wrapping up activity. I have uploaded the 2 videos to the Global Health Issues page.
http://wikitv313.wikispaces.com/Global+Health+Issues
Bill and Sue, could you add questions for the discussion?
I guess it might be a good idea for the students to say goodbye in an informal manner. I've created Farewell Party page for that.
https://wikitv313.blogspot.com/p/h.html
There the students can listen to the songs about the 5 diseases they've been working at and post farewell messages.
What do you think of it?
Keep in touch,
Nataliya

A bit of sad news.
Because of the flu in Kyiv, our school has been closed till the end of the week.
Hope the situation with the flu gets better soon and the students come back to school on February 19.
Some of them might post comments about final video presentations from their home computers.

Hi Nataliya,
Thank you for all of your work on this. I will add some questions to the global health issues page.
I'm sorry to hear that the flu is that bad. I hope you can stay healthy and we will connect when you return to school.
Cheers,
Bill

So sorry to hear that the flu is so pervasive there. We have had a tough winter with illness here as well. I am slowing uploading videos of the student prototypes in my groups. I’ve had some technical glitches but hope to have them all by the end of the day. I will ask students for their Keynote presentations and work to get those uploaded as well.
Be well,

Hi Bill, Sue, Tetiana and Tetiana, I'm sending a copy of the letter since in the first letter I used Tetiana's wrong address
Nataliya_Byzova Feb 4, 2018
Hi Bill, Sue, Tetiana and Tetiana,
What a wonderful collaboration we've had in these 3 weeks!
Week 1. (15-19 January)
The teachers introduced themselves
Week 2. (22-26 January)
Students' introductions were posted
Week 3. (29 January-2 February)
Students in their 20 teams were working on Work pages and communicating with each other on Introduction pages.
Now Week 4. (5-9 February) is coming.
During the 4th week the students in Kyiv expect the American teams to post their final videos. Some of the Ukrainian teams will also present their final videos, others will post comments in Discussion below the final videos. It will depend on the educational purposes the teachers have involved their students in the project for.
As Sue wrote before, it would be great to have the 5th week for the students' wrapping up meaningful communication about global health issues based on the 2 videos ( https://vimeo.com/191982925
and
http://www.100people.org/onehundred_lens_detail.php?subject=Health§ion=100people)
and teachers' questions.
I can create space for that.
I guess we should remind our students to check if there are any unanswered questions in Teams' Introduction space, as well, since some of their questions have been moved from work pages to Teams' introductions pages by Moderator.
What do you think of it?
Keep in touch,
Nataliya
P.S. Some of your students ask why there are different spellings of Kyiv.
I'm enclosing part of the letter from our City Administration (posted by Moderator in one of the comments as an answer to your students' question), which can explain that.

Hello,
What an honor it is to be collaborating with passionate educators in Kyiv. This has been an interesting and fun process. I want to let you know that due to some circumstances at our school, Colorado Academy, our class has not met every day as planned. I have postponed our videos until most likely February 12th and 13th. I hope this works for you.
Have a good week.
Best regards,
Sue

Hi All,
I agree that this has been a wonderful experience for the students and continues to be. My groups are posting information on their prototypes and they will also give their final presentations the same time as Sue's classes. We will post videos of these. I think that a follow up activity is a great idea . We have a school holiday from February 15 - 19th. We will be back on February 20th so that may be when we do the follow up activity.
Thanks for working with us,
Bill

I have use the 100 people project as in intro to the Health Design Challenge in the past.
I didn’t get to it and find that it may be a very interesting way for us to wrap up together and have the students have a final meaningful conversation.
http://www.100people.org/
The is a video intro and then a section on health. I really like the first health video.
Maybe we can come up with some questions for the students around larger global health issues. What do you think?

After watching it the students will be talking about global health issues answering the questions. Am I right?
I can create one space on the project page for all the participants (team members) where they will have that chat together.)

Yes, and I like the introduction too that is on the main page.
While it takes us into deeper water so to speak, I like the idea of bringing in the SDGs…we do this in our sixth grade Global Water Challenge. SDG 3 about Health care could also be an important wrap up:
https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org/sdg3
Bill…I love your ideas about the prototype too. The Pharmaceutical engineer role is the one I struggle the most with regarding students.
Have a great weekend.

Hi Tetiana,
I am so delighted that you are joining us in this project! We certainly will not judge. I can't imagine doing this project in a second language. While I have done international projects, this is my first time using Wikispaces. I love it! Nataliya has made it seem easy to participate.

Hi everybody,
All the students' introductions have been uploaded.
It's work time.
I have also offered my students to search for interesting sites and think of questions as you did Bill.
The students can exchange messages using wiki mail as well.
It's easy.
Just click on your name in the top right hand corner and send a message.
Or
Click on receiver's name and send a message.
Best wishes,
Nataliya

So fun to be involved in a project with you both! Natalyia, you are amazing! I’m the technology slug of the group but we are all ready to go. One question that I have for you is the name of your school. I’d like my students to Google the school and find out more. I’d also like them to learn a little about Kiev. I’d like them to ask questions of each other related to school life after they get into the project.
Best,
Sue

Hi Bill and Sue,
I have added the names of our schools to the project page.
Our teachers have been having a hectic time since these are the days of the English language at school.
https://photos.app.goo.gl/OOtVuShBKd7HRemZ2
A lot of activities which need teachers' attention have been presented by the students.
Our project is one of them, a very nice one.) Thank you for the brilliant idea!
The students are working at the work page task, and will be adding their information soon.
They will be also posting answers to your students' introduction questions and think of the questions they'd like to ask.
At last our both Tetianas have joined our teachers' team.)
They have been experiecing some technical problems as you, Sue, have.
You can read their greeting messages to you in the teaching space of the project,
which is the best place for the teachers' collaboration at the moment.
Keep in touch,
Nataliya

Registration of the students
Nataliya_Byzova Jan 21, 2018
The first thing a teacher should do after signing up is to register the students in a few steps -
just go to User Creator.(students needn' t have e-mail addresses)
or
Invite people (students should have e-mail addresses).
The 1st column should be user names, the 2nd column - passwords
e.g:
John_Smith 123456
Kate_Br banana
M_Ua spring
Sasha_1 project
John_Smith, Kate_Br, M_Ua, Sasha_1 are samples of user names, but 123456, banana, spring, project are samples of passwords.

Hi Sue and Nataliya,
I would like to first introduce you to each other.
Sue Counterman is a science teacher at Colorado Academy which is in Lakewood, Colorado. Lakewood is west of Denver.
Nataliya Byzova is an English teacher at Troyeshchyna gymnasium in Kiev, Ukraine
I am very excited to work with both of you on this project. Here are my thoughts on how to organize the work:
In order to make it easier to organize our groups I will have one of my classes be the Green Team and the other class be the Gold Team. Sue, maybe your classes could be the Blue and Red teams.
Then within each team they will be assigned to a group.
Group 1 - Diabetes
Group 2 - Celiac
Group 3 - Hyperlipidemia
Group 4 - Triathlete with Anemia
Group 5 - Cystic Fibrosis
We will break into groups on Monday, Tuesday a Nutritionist will speak to each class, Thursday/Friday they meet with a librarian to learn about researching a topic and then begin.
At some point this week I will video the students introducing themselves and saying which role they have chosen. We will post these on the Wiki.
On Monday (1/22) I will ask them to post a comment on the wiki and include:
internet sites that they have found, and to summarize the site
Ask 2 questions that they have. (I hope that this will start conversations with their partners in Kiev).
What do you hope to accomplish this week?
On Thursday/Friday (1/25 - 1/26) post comments to the wiki
- did you meet your goals
- what have you learned?
- questions
I will remind them during the week to check the wiki to see if there are new comments from their partners.
Sue and Nataliya, what are your thoughts on this?
Thanks,
Bill

Hi Bill and Sue.
Nice to meet you Sue. Very glad to work with you and Bill in this project. Thank you Bill for interesting ideas.
I wrote before that 2 more teachers from our school with their students volunteered to join. Their names are Tetiana Plkush and Tetiana Savchenko. They are teachers of English.
So we'll be able to have 20 teams (10 teams=№1-10 +10 teams №11-20) consisting of 4 students from the USA and 4 students from Ukraine as you asked.
To begin with, I have created the Wiki TV page for our project . This is how it looks.
https://wikitv313.blogspot.com/p/deliberating-in-democracy-channel.html
On this page first you can see
Teachers' introductions
Week 1. (15-19 January)
Our teachers will introduce themselves on Monday-Tuesday (15-16 January). We have already started preparing pages for that.
If you click, you'll be able to see your space for teacher's video introduction
Health Design Challenge
The second point of this week is about telling students how they are going to work. We'll be able to tell all our students about that during the 1st week (15-19 January)
Week 2. (22-26 January)
Students' introductions
Teams № 1-10
Students' introductions
Teams № 11-20
Our students (10 teams = №1-10 +10 teams = №11-20) will be able to introduce themselves and exchange greeting comments with your students in their 20 teams during the 2nd week (22-26 January)
Week 3. (29 January-2 February)
During the 3rd week our students in their 20 teams will work at the 4 tasks
- a health article
- a meal plan,
- a prototype (device or test),
- a drug/medicine
It's important for us to know how many teams in your school will be assigned to a group so that the following week they had the same topic for discussion with our students.
(.Our teams will choose the same number of groups)
Grouup 1 - Diabetes
Group 2 - Celiac
Group 3 - Hyperlipidemia
Group 4 - Triathlete with Anemia
Group 5 - Cystic Fibrosis
I will create the Wiki TV space where 20 US-Ukrainian teams will be able to present their work
Week 4. (5-9 February)
During the 4th week our students will present their work to their US partners in 20 teams
As I wrote before that would be great to have the 5th week for the students' communication, if not, the students can exchange feedback comments during the 4th week.
Keep in touch,
Nataliya

Keep in touch,
Nataliya

P.S. I have added our 2 letters to the teachers' introduction space on Wiki TV for our convenience.
We can discuss everything here, I guess.

P.P.S. As for
"Then within each team they will be assigned to a group.
Group 1 - Diabetes
Group 2 - Celiac
Group 3 - Hyperlipidemia
Group 4 - Triathlete with Anemia
Group 5 - Cystic Fibrosis"
Since we have 20 teams, don't you think it would be also convenient to have 4 teams for each group (4x5=20)?
Sue, I have sent you the invitation to Wiki TV. Hope you like it.

Letters from Sue to understand how the process is going)
Hello Nataliya,
It is a pleasure to meet you and I thank Bill for his work organizing this project. It will be so much more engaging this way. I will spend some time tomorrow morning looking at the Wiki carefully. I can send you my groups with names of students after Tuesday. I also think it would be great to have some sort of celebration to wrap up. Have you done this in the past when you worked together? I wondered if we got something off in the mail quickly that could arrive by the time we wrap up that would be fun. Send some sort of typical snack or a postcard from Colorado from each of our students?
A couple of items that aren’t in the timeline are that I ask students to keep a work log and an individual works cited page as a way to keep everyone accountable.
Warm regards,
Sue
Hi Nataliya,
Bill is going to show me the Wiki TV tomorrow. I was looking at some information and want to share the following:
https://www.nibib.nih.gov/ The bottom right corner: DEBUT shows some college projects.
The video is the most helpful I find. Our students should present their prototypes in a similar fashion.

Talk soon.

Hi Bill and Sue,
Everything looks clear.
In our school we have 14 first role teams and 6 teams extra with the second role, if necessary, to suit all your 20 teams.
When your students present their teams, we'll know for sure how many teams with the second role we should add or substract)
Sue, I don't think teachers need to send names of students. It would be great if the students introduced themselves in the teams' introductions.
The video you sent a link to is a very nice sample of the final project prototypes.
As for wrapping up ideas, our students would like to have some time to chat in farewell celebration comments on Wiki TV about whatever they 'd like to (at least during one week after the project has been completed). That could be music, food, sights etc- each team or a member of the team could choose what to talk about.
Our teachers will join soon.
Best,
Nataliya

Hi Nataliya,
