Water - facts and myths

Why do we need to drink water?

Water cleans our body, controls our temperature, and helps to keep us healthy. About 70% of body is water.

How much water do we need to drink a day?

We often read that we need to drink at least eight glasses of water a day (about two liters). In fact, how much water we need depends on the weather and on what we're doing. When we are hot, or if we do sport or exsercise, we need to drink more. Some experts say that, in normal conditions, we only really need about one liter a day.

Can we drink too much water?

Yes. It can be dangerous to drink a lot of water. Recently a British actor nearly died after drinking eight liters of water a day for several months.

Holiday diaries. Part 1

Lisa and Jon

Monday

It's raining and it's cold. Today we met the other people on the work camp - they're friendly but they're very different from us.

Dinner was a disaster - we can't cook.

Tuesday

We got up at 6.00 and started cleaning the river. In the afternoon we planted 20 trees. It's still raining and all our clothes are wet and dirty.

Wednesday

This morning the sun came out! We had the morning free and we went on a boat trip - we stopped work and relaxed! In the afternoon - back to work. And it started raining again.

Holiday diaries. Part 2

Sue and Jerry

Monday

The hotel's OK but there's no view.

In the morning we went shopping - but we didn't buy anything.

In the afternoon we went up the Empire State Building - a great view from the top...

Tuesday

We like the food very much - there are so many different restaurants. We walked in Central Park - really beautiful. In the afternoon we went to the Guggenheim Museum - incredible.

Wednesday

Today was a great day. We saw the sights - Brooklyn Bridge, the Statue of Liberty. In the evening we went to The Village, a famous nightclub - we went to bed at three in the morning!

It's written in the cards. Part 1

'Come in,' said a voice. Jane Ross opened the door and went into a small room. There was a man sitting behind a table.

'Good afternoon,' said Jane. 'I want to see Madame Yolanda, the fortune teller.'

'Madame Yolanda isn't here today,' said the man. 'But don't worry. I'm going to tell you about your future. What questions do you want to ask?' Jane looked at the fortune teller. She couldn't see him very well because the room was very dark.

'Well,' she said, 'I have a problem with my boyfriend. We argue all the time. I don't think he loves me. I want to know if we're going to stay together.'

'Please choose five cards, but don't look at them.'

Jane took five cards. The fortune teller put them on the table face down. He turned over the first card.

It's written in the cards. Part 2

'Ah, this is a good card. This means you're going to be very lucky.' 'But am I going to stay with my boyfriend?' Jane asked.

'Maybe,' said the fortune teller. 'We need to look at the other cards first.'

He turned over the second card.

'Mm, a house. A new house. You're going to move, very soon, to another country.' 'But my boyfriend works here. He can't move to another country.' 'Let's look at next card,' said the fortune teller.

He turned over the third card.

'A heart. You're going to fall in love.' 'Who with?' asked Jane.

'Let me concentrate. I see a tall man. He's very attractive.'

'Oh that's Jim,' said Jane. 'Who's Jim? Your boyfriend?'

'No. Jim's a man I met at the party last month. He's an actor, and he says he's in love with me. It was his idea for me to come to Madame Yola

Food can be dangerous

When you go to a restaurant you often think that the food you are ordering is good for you. But many restaurants serve healthy food, like fish or salad, with a sauce or dressing that uses a lot of oil, fat, or sugar.

The British Food Standarts Agency wants all restaurants to say in their menus exactly what is in each dish, how many calories, how much fat, and what additives. They think that restaurants don't give their customers enough information, and that this new plan could help people to have a healthier diet.

But chefs are not happy with the Agency's plan. One top chef said, 'People are not stupid. They know that many sauces have butter and cream in them. But if we put on a menu that a dish has 1,000 calories, nobody is going to order it!'

The inside story - Nuria

Nuria from Spain lives in Los Angeles.

I was surprised - people drive quite slowly. People use their cars for everything.
You never see people walking in the street.

People don't go out during the week because they work very hard.
It's normal to work twelve hours a day and people usually only have one or two weeks' holiday.
Work is the most important thing here, more important than family or social life.

People are really nice here. It's easy to talk to them.
And in shops the shop assistants are very helpful.
They always say, "Have a good day!"

The inside story Monica

Monica from Argentina lives in Tokyo.

There is almost no crime here. You can walk safely in the city late at night.
And you can leave things in your car and nobody steals them!

People drive carefully, but the big problem is that there aren't any street names.
It's impossible to find where you want to go. Even taxi drivers don't know!
Also traffic lights are horizontal and they are difficult to see.

(People) They are shy and polite and they speak very quietly.
But when they drink some of them change completely!

Last Friday night I went out with people from work and we ended up in a karaoke bar.
My boss is usually quite serious but he sang "My Way" very loudly and badly.

The inside story Kevin

Kevin from the UK lives in Milan.

Appearance is very important. Everybody dresses well, but especially the men.
They are very elegant and wear very stylish clothes. It's easy to see who the British people are here.

They love food here and it is fantastic!
But times are changing. Today many people under 35 can't cook.
Supermarkets are full of food now which you can put in the microwave.
When I first came to live here there weren't any McDonald's but now they are everywhere.

People here are in love with their cars and they drive very fast.
Even the nicest people become aggressive when they drive.

The Atacama desert

The Atacama desert in Chlie is a spectecular place.
There is very ;ittle vegitation, and it looks like the moon -
in fact NASA tested their lunar vehicles here.
There are some very big volcanoes.
Almost nobody lives there, but there are some small villages on the edge of the desert.
Life is hard and everything needs to imported - food, building materials, and of course water.

In 1971 it rained in Atacama. People were amazed because the last time it rained there was 400 years earlier,
in 1570. It is the driest place in the world.
But in the village of Chungungo they are now getting water from the fog clouds which come in from the sea.
Daisy Sasmaya, a villager, says, 'We are very happy because now we can have a shower every day, and we can water our plants every week.
