Hi from Our Ukrainian Challenge 20/20 Teams!

It's so cool to have a common class with students from the USA and Argentina.
We're 10-Grade students and we are going to talk about us and Challenge 20/20 project :)

P6300903.JPG
What is biodiversity?

Is biodiversity the total of everything in all the ecosystems that make up our planet?
Does it include:
- the planet itself,
- and all the people, animals, and plants that inhabit it?
Does it also encompass the sun, and the wind,
since they provide part of the ecosystems that spawn and sustain life?
Further, if it encompasses everything that exists, is biodiversity what sustains life as we know it
If so, must it be preserved and conserved, for our well-being,
as well as that of every animal and plant species, and the well-being of the planet we live on?
Are animal, fish or plant species (or all of them) in the Dnipro River in Kyiv,
Ukraine vanishing due to changes in the land or water itself, or as a result of some new strain of disease?
Does the Dnipro River in Kyiv resemble rivers in the USA and Argentina?
What could be done to stop ecosystem losses? What could be done to stop the Dnipro ecosystem losses?

Here is our last year's programme about Kyiv's nature))

We 've also tried to sort our thoughts out in the Chat Room before broadcasting the presentation. What do you guys think about all that? Waiting for your comments.

Hello everyone! We all greatly appreciate your sympathetic comments. We at Dawson are all fine now, but in some places things are not going too well. Since our school is not very close to the mountains, we often forget about how much others are still struggling with the flood. I used to live in an area that was severely affected by the recent floods, so to give you all some more information about other people, not just Dawson's community, I decided to write a little based on my family and friends' experience.
Our friends in the mountain had a terrifying time, and they are still living in rental houses and rebuilding their homes. A particular area which was almost completely destroyed was a town in the canyon called Salina. Lots of houses were pushed down into river banks or covered by mud slides. Some people were trapped under boulders, many were airlifted out, and a couple families had to hike up the mountain to safety. Thankfully, everyone from there is mostly okay, and no one was severely injured or killed. As we speak, these people still have no place to call "home." Over half of the houses in Salina were destroyed, and all of them were damaged in some way. They have been working long hours trying to repair their home. The road up to this town is very damaged, and some places of it are caving in, so it takes double as long to drive up. Lots of kids live in Salina, and they must continue going to school, doing homework, and staying in a normal life routine. One very sad and difficult fact is this: Several people had just finished rebuilding their homes after the Fourmile Fire in 2010, and didn't have any flood insurance when water destroyed their new house.
Generous volunteers, charities, and ordinary citizens have been pitching in to help whoever needs it. Organizations have been raising money for families, volunteers have been working, and regular people give support, sympathy, and courage.
Thank you again for all of your kind comments! It means a lot to people still struggling. Hope to hear from you soon!

Hi Cordelia!
It's really interesting question.
In my free time I like hanging out with my friends, listening to music, reading books, singing, drawing or cooking.

I like different music. I like rock, indi rock, reggy music. I listen to different bands. My favourite foreign bands and are Nirvana, Muse and Depeche Mode. I like Ukrainian and Russian bands so much. For example. "Океан Эльзи","Пятница", "Бумбокс". I think it will be interesing fot you to listen to Ukrainian music.
Yes, I read books in English. We read in on the English lessons, and I read it at home too. My favourite book of all is " Flowers for Algernon" by Daniel Keyes.

Greetings students in the Ukraine,
I enjoyed watching your introductions and meeting all of you. I am excited for the opportunity for my students to work with all of you. Many of them are also interested in music and sports so you will have a lot in common. I feel that we are a Global Community and what happens in one country can impact the environment all over the world. This is why it is so important that we respect each other and work together.
Sincerely,
Mr. Meyers

It's true that we are a Global Community and what happens in one country can impact the environment all over the world.

Dear Mr Mayers,
I am sorry that you have suffered flooding.
I would like to tell you about yesterday's weather. The wind was very heavy. When i was going home it pushed me down. THis September is the coldest since 1901. IT's chilly at shcool, at home.
I wish you good weather.
All the best,
Sasha, 10-V
Kyiv, Ukraine

USmslade Sep 30, 2013
I really enjoyed all your videos, but I find the Ukrainian floods most intriguing. It seems strange that two parts of the world experienced heavy rain and flooding at the same time. What's also interesting is the fact that Ukraine and Colorado have not have this kind of weather for over 100 years, but when it did happen, they happened around the same time. It would be cool to compare the results of the floods from Boulder and Kyiv and see what different or similar effects they had on the ecosystems.
Thank you!
Matt in Boulder, Colorado

MaximinoJose_Ar Oct 9, 2013
hello q is very amazing what happens. Would I be interested to know what the chima abitualmente in ukraine?. greetings from Argentina and strength!

Greetings from Argentina

anaprieto2013 Sep 22, 2013
Hi Nataliya and students:

We are very happy to work with you. We'd like to know more about your place.
We've all seen videos of Chernobyl, and we'd like you to tell us how they managed to overcome this problem. How is that area now? Do your city also suffered this problem?
Here in the year 2011, we had the eruption of Puyehue volcano which sent ash across the area.
Bill told us about a unique rain that caused extensive flooding in their region.
I think that everywhere we have environmental problems to work and learn a little more about how affect ecosystems.

Best regards.

Ana Prieto - Teacher

Sorry, I forgot the link about the eruption of Puyehue volcano http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Puyehue-Cord%C3%B3n_Caulle_eruption

Nataliya_Byzova Sep 24, 2013
Hi Ana,
Chernobyl accident was in 1986 but we still experience its consequences - polluted areas, increase of deseases. Kyiv is said to be a clean from radiation city, but it's very close to Chernobyl. There are fild trips to Chernobyl, there is a museum of Chernobyl in Kyiv.

This September 2013 is different from previous ones. It's very wet. 4 months amount of water has already fallen in the form of rain in Kyiv. There were heavy storms in the south and west of Ukraine which caused flooding. Hundreds of houses were damaged. Very similar to what happened in Colorado.

You are right. We have environmental problems to work on.
Best,

Nataliya Byzova

"In the Chernobyl zone they are going to bring down all nuclear waste of Ukraine.
Spent radiation sources storage is going to open in the Chernobyl zone in 2013'', said the chairman of the State Agency Management exclusion zone Vladimir Holosha during the visit of "Vector"
According to him, there will remain only the waste of Ukraine.
"This store will further contain all sources of ionizing radiation on the territory of Ukraine , which are stored in the special plants of bankrupt enterprises and so on, and will be safe, at least for 50 years'', Holosha said at a briefing in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone on 5 October.
According to him , a lot of radioactive waste in Ukraine remains near major cities, and these areas must be cleaned .
The future storage is meant to take up 21,000 radiation sources per year.
"This will allow for 15 years actually collect everything in one place and make our environment safer ," - said the official.
Meanwhile, the British Ambassador to Ukraine Leigh Turner highlighted the fact that all radioactive waste should be removed from the territory of Ukraine away from populated areas to help prevent their possible misuse, including by potential terrorists.
To do this , the ambassador said about further cooperation with Ukrainian authorities to provide support to Ukraine in this respect from The U.S., France, Germany , Sweden and the European Union as a whole .
Britain has allocated for the construction eight million pounds - said Lee Turner.
Additional 2 million was allocated by European Commission .
Ukraine, according to Kholosha , has invested in the infrastructure of the complex UAH 250 million.

Asta luego!

Hello students in Argentina!
Thank you for these wonderful video's and pictures of your school. It is very interesting that both of our schools are close to the mountains and about the same distance from the equator. We are just in opposite hemispheres. I look forward to getting to know all of you better through our work this year.

Cheers,

Thank you Bill. What a coincidence that we are the same distance from the Ecuador but in opposite hemispheres. It was a pity that I didn't spend near Colorado on my trip, I would have liked much know them.
I hope to do a nice job with you and Ukraine.
Best regards.
