Flooding

Sammycenteno Nov 13, 2013
We had something happen like this about a month ago. It can be so hard and I hope things are back on track now. During the flooding were you able to drink water from the sink or was it contaminated by the flood?
.

Yura_Shavrov Nov 15, 2013
We live in Kiev, so we didn't suffer by the flood. But people in Zakarpatia weren't able to drink water from the well for a long time.

StefaniaPamela_Ar Nov 21, 2013

Floods in Europe

bmeyers5 Nov 11, 2013
Hello Oleksii and Angelina, your video shows how widespread a problem flooding is. One of the pictures showed a town where only the roof was above water on each of the homes. That is an amazing amount of water!

Hello, I really enjoyed this video. It interesting to see how many countries can be affected by flooding. I don't believe major floods happen in the USA very often, but we do experience hurricanes, tornados, and earthquakes quite a bit. Do you believe you experience other major disasters often like floods?
Thanks, Cordelia

Hi!
That was a great video. I am a student at Alexander Dawson School, and we had floods quite recently here. I think that it is interesting that a disaster is usually considered unusual, yet we seem to have so many! How many different floods were shown in your video?
Thanks!

Hello my name is jorge and it is sad how this happened to you guys. Here in Colorado we had flooding and we had to work as a community to rebuild. I was wondering how bad did the flood effect you.

ChaseFulkerson Nov 13, 2013
Hello, this video showed me that these floods were enormous. These floods were much bigger than the flood that we recently had in Colorado. What was the average amount of damage that people had on their houses from the floods?

Thanks, Chase

Hi everybody,
Floods were in a lot of countries in September 2013. Kyiv (where we live) did not suffer from the flood. In Ukraine the floods were in the west of Ukraine and especially in the south - in Odesa region where water destroyed 53 homes and more than 100 m of pipeline, about 1 km railway line and destroyed about four thousand heads of cattle and poultry.
It was reported that continuous rains caused flooding in the south of Odessa region, killing two people.
Water flooded about 400 homes. 600 people were evacuated including about 100 children.

My students will add more information about floods in Ukraine and neighbouring European countries.

Hi Diana, Thank you for this very nice video. I particularly liked the maps and information that you posted. It gave me a better understanding of the region and the amount of flooding. Since this happened in 2008 have the people been able to rebuild their towns? How are they doing now?

Hi there!
I really liked the pictures you guys put into the video and I thought that it was really cool that some of them showed where they were taken! Here in Colorado, we can relate to what happened there because, as you probably know, it flooded here not too long ago. How many of you lived in an area that was heavily effected because of the water/flooding?
Thanks!

Lutsk and Odessa floods

bmeyers5 Nov 11, 2013
Hi Jane and Artem, I enjoyed your video very much. These stories of heavy rain causing flooding are very similar to what we experienced this year. I agree that people have to help each other during these kinds of disasters. Many people with no apartments to return to and maybe their businesses have been ruined as well. Do you think that we have had an influence on these disasters through logging forests, building on wetlands, or perhaps climate change?

All the best,
Mr. Meyers

Hello!
That was a great video! I liked the video clips that people took during the actual flooding. As many people have said, we just had a flood here and almost everyone was affected in some way. Lots of people helped out others, or had to be helped. Was it the same situation there?
Thanks!

Hello! That was a very good video. I really enjoyed watching it and I got a better knowledge about how bad the flood was there. Recently Colorado got a flood and it was very devastating and disastrous. How many days did the flood go on for?

JGK13 Nov 13, 2013
Hello! That video was really good but the flooding was really bad. It's sad to see that because we just had a horrible flood here in Boulder, Colorado. Other places in Colorado were also effected. I don't think our water was as deep in some places as yours was, though. How many days was the flood and how many people were effected? Thanks.

Thank you for all these comments. I know it is awful, but by this video I tried to show the importance of mutual aid, as some of you have said. I'm touched by the fact that some of this video is sunk you into the soul. I'll try to do similar projects in such programmes, and will be glad to see you, that may soon be possible.

Your floods sound very similar to some of the floods we get in the United States. I thought that it was cool how instead of being sad about the flood you just made something fun out of it by swimming. Your video was very informative and interesting to listen to.

Thank you all for sharing so much useful and interesting information with us!! Floods will always cause devastation and destruction, but I loved the story about how people were making the most if the situation and playing in the water! Our class recently read a few articles about the protests in your country, and I was just curious about how you all were doing. What is it like having all of that happening everywhere around you?

Hi there!
This video was great. You guys did a very good job pointing out interesting facts about the floods in Europe. I though it was cool how you said that you swim in the water when it floods instead of being sad. Your floods are very much like some of our floods. Your English was also very clear especially the main host of the video.

Hello guys,
We are really glad to hear from you.
Thanks for your comments and for praising our program about floods. It was pleasant for us to see interest in your comments.
Answering the question “Did any of your homes get destroyed during the floods”, we can say that the Dnipro river has a dam, that is why we don’t have floods in Kyiv. But some of our friends’ houses in Lutsk, Ivano-Frankivsk and Odessa regions got destroyed.
As for latest events in Ukraine, school students don’t take part in them. At the moment we are in school.
As for our project, we are preparing questions which we would like you to answer. We will post them on Tuesday.
Best wishes,
10-A students.
Kyiv, Ukraine .

Hello everyone!
Thank you for your pleasant feedbacks. I really appreciate your compliments about our English and the manner of organising this video. It's such a pleasure to read that you've learned a lot of new information about floods and that we managed to make it interesting and easy to listen to. We will continue improving our videos.
And about the revolution in Ukraine: personally, I am very concerned about this situation. I am watching a lot of TV now in order to hear the latest news and to listen to thoughts of different people, especially politicians. I'm also surfing the net every day. The situation is really tense and almost everyone is watching the latest events. But, of course, it doesn't affect school and process of studying, though after school or on weekends both teachers and students go to the Maidan (if they want to do so) to support people there. To cut a long story short, this is the main topic in Ukraine for today. We are protesting against arbitrary of our government. Our aim is to restore democracy, human rights and power of the Ukrainian people in their country.

bmeyers5 Jan 30, 2014
Dear Olga, thank you for explaining the situation in Ukraine. We are following the developments closely and hope for the best. Please know that we support you and hope that you are safe.

Sincerely,

Hello guys!
I'm glad that you enjoyed our video and you learned a lot from our programme. I write a scientific paper on the impact of solar activity on Earth, and I can say with confidence that the excessive amount of UV rays also affect the number of floods worldwide. And as universally known that due to global warming and ozone depleted ball more ultraviolet radiation reaches the Earth. And here is another result of global warming. I hope you will interested in this information.
All the best,
Jane Zaets
