Stasia Chernega Bram StokerDRACULA

3-4 May

Jonathan Harker travels to the Count Dracula because he wants to issue some documents. First, he leaves Munich and goes by train to Vienna. Then he travels to Klausenburgh where he stays at the “Hotel Royale”. Here he tastes Hungarian dishes and gets some recipes for Mina. On the next day John sits in the carriage which goes to Bistritz. In the evening he arrives to Bistritz. He stays in the Golden Krone hotel where Dracula has left a letter for him. The letter says that Count’s carriage will wait for him near the hotel.

In the morning before Jonathan leaves, one woman who works in the hotel starts to beg him not to go. But Jonathan says that he must go. Then the woman says him that today is the eve of St. George’s Day and at midnight all the evil things will have a full sway. But Jonathan must go today. So, the woman gives him a crucifix and he sits in the Count’s carriage.

It’s morning. John gets up and has a breakfast in the inn. He has some bits of beef with red pepper, “robber steak” and a couple of glasses of wine. It is Golden Mediasch, which produces a queer sting on the tongue. After the breakfast he gets on the coach. He sees that his driver and a landlady talk about him. Then other people join them and they talk and look at him. He hears some words, which the people often repeat. He takes his polyglot dictionary and translates some words. They are “Ordog” – Satan, “stregoica” – witch and “vrolok” – were-wolf or vampire. Then the people make the sign of the cross and point two fingers towards him. He can’t understand that it means. So, he asks another passenger in the coach. The passenger says that it is a charm against the evil eye. Soon, the driver sits at his seat and their journey begins. Jonathan sees green land full of forests and hills. The hills are crowned by farmhouses and trees. There many apples, plumes and pears. He looks at beautiful landscapes and starts to lose a recollection of strange fears.

Jonathan travels in the carriage through the land called “Mittel Land”. A road sweeps around green hills. It is rugged. It’s excellent in summer, but it isn’t good now. Although the road is bad their driver drives the coach with a top haste. John can’t understand why the driver hurries. Beyond the green hills rise steep slops of Carpathians. Left and right the peaks of the mountains tower. Some of them are covered with snow. Everything has different colours: shadows of the peaks are deep blue or purple, grass and rocks – brown and green. Their road loses in endless perspective of the jagged steeps and pointed crags. Here and there you can see many rifts. By the roadside are many crosses, and when they pass them John’s companions cross themselves. Here and there they see a man or a woman, kneeling before a shrine. Now and again they pass clumps of birches, with their white stems and green leaves. Everything is very unusual for Jonathan.

Jonathan and his companions continue their travel. Evening falls and it gets very cold.
They pass pine woods, where trees look closing down upon them. It creates a very weird and solemn effect.
Then they see a ghost-like cloud and some grim fancies appear in Jonathan’s head.
Some hills they pass are very steep. Although their driver drives with the top haste, they move slowly.
So, Jonathan wishes he can help the driver and get down, but the driver stops him.
He says that John shouldn’t get down because the dogs are too fierce. The driver hurries, so he stops only to switch lamps.
His hastiness looks very weird. He lashes the horses with his whip, and urges them on to further tries.
At last, Jonathan starts to see a patch of lights, and the other passengers become more excited - they enter the Borgo Pass.
The passengers give Jonathan some gifts, which are guards against the evil eye.
In these lands everybody is so superstitious!

It’s evening. Jonathan’s coach goes very fast and they arrive to the place where Dracula’s carriage has to wait for John early. But there’s no carriage, so the driver says that they will go to Bukovina now, and tomorrow they’ll come back. Suddenly John and the other passengers hear a noise of the Dracula’s coach, and the coach stops beside them. The coach is driven by a tall man, who hides his face with a black hat. The man says that Jonathan is very early tonight. Then what Jonathan’s driver answers, that John hurries. After that the stranger says that he knows that the driver wants Jonathan to go to Bukovina and that he can’t deceive him. As he speaks he smiles, and his teeth look sharp. Then he says the driver to give Jonathan his luggage. The stranger puts it on his coach and in a minute Jonathan sits in the coach, too. The strange driver shakes his reins and they start to move. Jonathan looks behind and sees his old companions, crossing themselves. Although he has a rug on his knees and a coat on his shoulders, he feels a strange chill. The strange driver says that under the seat is bottle of slivovitz, but Jonathan doesn’t take it. He feels wierd and he’s frightened. His journey looks as a going over and over the same ground again. So, he takes a note one relief point, and finds it again! He wants to ask the driver what does it mean, but he’s afraid.
