Jehan Shuman, a famous computer programmer, takes Technical Aub to New Pentagon. Myron Aub has an unusual gift. Shuman discovers it quite by accident(BY ACCIDENT). Aub multiplies nine on/BY seven without computer. Congressman Brant takes out his pocket computer and checks the result of themultiplying. He thinks that Aub is AN illusionist. +But Myron doesn’t guess and calculates on the sheet of paper. Aub explains that it only seems difficult because gentlemen are not used to it. Actually, the rules are quite simple and work for any numbers. The Congressman takes out his own computer and pushes it at random (AT RANDOM). Aub sets to work and multiplies two four-digit numbers.
It takes Aub a week to get the real hang of computing. But really what is the use of it? Aub explains that it is the way towards freedom from the machine. The Technician has a hobby – the reconstructionof some ancient plans. He studies the details and can imitate them.
It is A peaceful hobby for humans and people have no time for war. The Congressman catches the point.

Programmer Shuman talks to Loesser. He is A controller of the West European computer unit. Shuman says that cave humans don’t have computers. Then they talk about Aub’s talent. Aub can determine, and correctlyintegral quotients and decimal quotients without a computer. They set Aub a problem. Aub divides twenty-seven by thirteen. This trained and THE talented mathematician solves square roots and cube roots.
Then Loesser says that their goal is simple. It is the replacement of the computer. They want to create a ship that can navigate space without a computer on board. A missile with the man or two is lighter, more mobile, and more intelligent. They can use Aub’s talent to win wars.
Then Aub goes home and writes a letter. His hobby is a pleasure, an exercise of mind. They are going to use it only for death and destruction. He cannot face the responsibility. He turns the focus of a protein-depolarizer. Finally Aub fells/FALLS dead.
GOOD!
Herman Gelb and Peter Jonsbeck are going to lunch and talk about old man Hargrove. They walk down the corridor and into a room with a smell of spicy food. Meal is prepared by computer. It is untouchedby human hands. It is Peter’s own programming. He promises Herman a treat.
Hargrove is consulting with Jonsbeck on programming. Herman and Peter talk about war Hargrove with computers. He attacks with analysis. He wants the world to be noblehonestdecent, full of respect for human and so on. They must keep up the pressure on the bad guys. They say that the people got a world to run, space to developcomputerization to widen. Hargrove wants quick improvement – by force. Except that Hargrove thinks he can find a way. He puts certain starting conditions into the computer and let it fight the war mathematically and gives the results. Then Peter explains that computer has many combinations and gives the model of the war. Then the computer gets the combination to the government.12
There are a hundred factors and millions of combinations in the equations for war. Peter uses men, weapons, surprise, counterattack, ships and space stations. He mustn’t forget computers. Hargrove thinks it’s possible to find some combination of special starting conditions. It results in clear victoryfor people and not too much damage to the world. If Hargrove can find the combination he thinks he can argue their government into fighting the war. But there will be losses. But the computer will compare the losses and other damage to the economy and ecology to the benefits from their control over the world. If it decides the benefits will out weight the losses then it will give the go-ahead for a war.
They are sitting at the lip of a volcanic crater like that. The computer program tries to foresee the unexpected but they can never be sure. And computer cannot do realistic combination of war. Computers put a greater value on human lives than human beings do themselves. They don’t want any war. Hargrove have/HAS his own self-righteousness. He wantS to find this combinations.11
Robert L. Forward is a physicist and now he demonstrates some mechanism. A large ring of particles ARE compressesED by a magnetic field. This large RING is named doughnut. These particles are moving at 0.95 times the speed of the light. They can change any object that passes through the hole of the doughnut. Left and right sides will change. Everything will interchange. This is the way to get a large supply of antimatter. Robert tries to send a beam of protons through the hole. But nothing happens because the doughnut is not powerful enough. If he can show this change, he can get a grant and make a stronger machine. And Robert is going to jump into the ring himself. He cannot ask any one to take the chance. Rob climbs a small ladder and jumps, he lands on a rubber mattress and he is alive. He feels perfectly normal and nothing changes. He is as sure of that as he is sure that his name is Robert L. Backward.11
Margie writes about that night in her dairy. On the page of May 17, 2155, she writes that Tommy finds a real book.
This book is very old and a real paper. It’s successful. The pages are yellow and it is awfully funny to read words that stood STAND still instead of moving on a screen. They thought THINK that people after reading the book throw it away. Their television screen must have a million books on it and it’s good for more.
This book is about school and Margie hates school because teacher gives her test after test. She hates it more than everCountry Inspector takes THE teacher apart. After an hour or so he repairs it. But Tommy’s teacher takes out away because the history sector is out of ordercompletely.
But children many years ago anyway had a teacher. A real man isn’t smart enough. But Margie isn’t prepares PREPARED to dispute that. The screen said SAYS that today is a lesson of the addition of proper fractions.
Professor Firebrenner explains that time-perception depends on the structure of the Universe. When it is expanding, people feel that time is going forward, when it is contracting, people feel that it is going backward. If the Universe is static, time stands still.
Mr. Atkins says that he cannot put the Universe in stasis. But the professor tells him about unbelievableadventure. Their trip will last less than a minute. While they nail the ship to the Universe, the Earth moves about the Sun, the Sun moves about the core of the Galaxy. The professor calculates those motions and finds that 27.5 million years in the future our Sun becomes a red dwarf star. He wants to go to the red dwarf star for studying it a bit.
One day the professor nails the ship to the fabric of the Universe while 27.5 million years pass. In less than a flash, time beginS to move forward again in the usual way. During two-and-a-half hours they photograph the star and its spectrum, test the chemical composition of the gas.
But when they are back, space is black. The professor frowns. They are in absolute vacuum. It is primeval Chaos. The Big Bang destroys them. A new Universe is alive.11+1
