Marianna Khomeriki. My book The Amsterdam Connection

Kate Jensen is having a drink with Max Carson.
Max says he thinks Kate should have some time to rest.
He invites her to come to the Netherlands to write an article on his football club.
This is the last time Kate will speak to Max before his death.
Max always asks Kate about her latest story.
He looks to know what is happening to Kate.
He still loves the newspaper business.
Max and Balzano are complete opposites and not just because Balzano's father is Italian and Max's mother is Dutch.
Balzano is a very good editor.
Now he lives in Holland!
The main character Kate tells him about her last story and the reason Kate is exhausted.
Max is right and Kate needs a holiday.
Life in the city is really tough for the past few months.
Kate has some difficult murder stories the usual zero information from the London police and Balzano pushes her as usual.
Kate begins to feel tired and the idea of getting away from London is a very attractive one!
And Max proposes her to come to Holland and to write the story about their club.
Rotterdam City Football Club is one of the top clubs in Europe.
The club takes kids who can play football off the streets an trains them to be the best.
Football schools are the reason why Holland has so many great footballers.
Max is always crazy about football!
He spends a lot of free time watching football matches.
He is the one of those guys who knows the name of every footballer in Europe!
But Kate says Max that she even always writes about crime in London-not about football!
Then Max looks at his watch and finishes his beer quickly.
He has a dinner with his friend that evening but he is already late.
He gets up and promises Kate he will rang her in a few days!
But Max never rang .
In fact Kate never saw him again.
Two days later he was found lying dead in an Amsterdam street with twenty knife wounds in his body!
Nick and Kate are both news reporters on the Daily Echo.
Their desks sit side by side!
They work together every day and at times like this Rick is the person Kate usually talks to.
They hear the news of Max's death from the police in London.
Amsterdam is one of the safest cities in the world.
Soft and drugs -yes but not much crime at all.Certainly not violent crime.
Kate has to know the city quite well about two years before during a story about a British guy who was selling stolen paintings there.
At the time Kate makes a friend in Dutch police.
Max was found by the police in the area of Amsterdam called de Pijp in the early hours of the morning.
Police think that it is mugging but Kate isn't think so because murder didn't try to steal Max's money.
Kate don't know what to do .
Now she is scared and she wants to know Max better.
And then she remembers how Rick says to her what there is one thing about Max that she doesn't know.
That secret thing-is that one time Max saves Rick's life.
And Rick start to tell this story!
Some years ago he worked in Evening news and he wrote about babies and marriages.
He has a dream to write a big story about crime -the biggest!
And then Max (he was the best Rick's friend) gives him an easy story about boy-murder from London.
One day Rick decides to stop murdering and he goes to this boy-murder!
It is the grate chance to get a really big story!
Max knows that Rick is going to this boy and he looks for him.
He puts his own life in danger for Rick.!
But now Max is dead and this story is in the past!
All people from magazine Echo hard believe in his death.
It is so sudden and violent.
So Kate decides to go to Amsterdam and to know that happens and why Max is dead now...(
Kate arrives in Amsterdam at 9.30 On Monday morning. She rings Elly van Praag of the Dutch police from Schiphol Airport.
Elly is a friend Kate made during the case of the stolen two years ago.
Elly isn't working this morning and Kate arranges to meet two hours later at a cafe she knows in the Jordan, an old part of Amsterdam.
She catches the train from the airport and takes a taxi into the centre from Central Station.
Kate has a room in Keizer hotel because there is a lot of visitors in Amsterdam in spring and Good Rooms are difficult to find.
The hotel isn't nice, but Kate isn't a expecting to be staying long. She leaves her bag and goes to meet Elly.
Elly iis seats already in a cafe, she kisses Kate and says she is wonderful to see her!
Elly is a typical Dutch. She is tall and very blonde, and looks like a sportswoman . In a fact she is a good cyclist, she usually to be found cycling hundreds of kilometers around Holland With her number on her back. She looks like the daughter of a Dutch farmer, which she is, with red cheeks and bright blue eyes.
And like most Dutch people of her age she speaks English very good!
We seat down and order coffee. It is fine spring day , the sky is blue with little white tablecloth.
Kate tells Elly about her meeting with Max just few days ago.
Elly isn't a football fan, and knows nothing about the Rotterdam club.
She doesn't know about crime in Amsterdam too.
De Pijp , where Max has died, is omen of the oldest parts of the city, a lively place with a wonderful street markers at its centre, on a street calls Albert Cuypstraat.
It is strange to think that this lovely colorful place is where Max had lost his life.
Elly says that Dj Pipj gets quite dangerous these days.
The waiter arrives with the coffees , Elly's black and Kate's with milk, Elly orders a cake too.
All that crime-fighting and cycling makes her hungry.
Elly says that Max was in a wrong place at a wrong time.
The police always asks for the examination of a body found like this.
Kate thinks that Max is lying dead with twenty knife wounds in his body.
Kate feels cold, although the spring air is warm.
Kate says that police don't find much on Max's body at all. Just the usual.
Max didn't have much family, his wife was died years ago, and they didn't have any children.
There is just his brother, Tom.
Kate knows that Max lived near The Hague. He asked Kate to stay at this house a few time, but Kate never seemed to have time.
Elly gets up to go to work.
Kate doesn't know much about football, but she knows that name. Jos van Essen was one of the greatest footballers of all time.
Kate sits back down at the table and thinks.Jon van Essen is a great footballer, like Pele or Shearer .A real star.
He plays for Holland lots of times and always scores lots of goals!
He is also very good looking.
There are reports in the newspapers about his girlfriends, who are usually models or actresses.
He is only twenty-eight still quite young to retire.
Kate takes her map. Oude Schans is a long walk way.
Kate remembers how she was there last time she was in Amsterdam in Bimhuis jazz club.+
It is a nice part of the city.
It is a lovely day so Kate decides to walk and to think about Max.
She walks of towards Oude Schans to see the ex-footbalers.+
There is a light wind and the smell of salt is over the river canal.
The sea isn't far away in Amsterdam.
She turns onto Roadhuistrat and walks towards Dam Square.
The retired footballer lives in an apartment beside the canal.
It is 1.30 when Kate gets to his apartment block.
She pressed the bell and Jos van Essen's voice comes through the intercom.+
Kate tells him she is a friend of Max's and the door opens.
Jos's voice is soft and pleasant.
Like all Dutch houses, this one is tall and thin, and the stairs are very narrow.
Kate finally gets to the top and she knocks.
Then she looks at Jos.His smile is beautiful.
He has the whitest teeth Kate had ever seen!+
He is wearing black jeans and a pink shirt, which looks great against his black skin.
His body still looks fit!
Jos's apartment isn't very big, but apartments in Holland are usually quite small...
He must be rich, Kate thinks, the furniture looks expensive!
Kate reads that he earns millions playing for Rotterdam.
So Jas would have a big house somewhere, perhaps at the beach, perhaps abroad.+
And they begin to talk about Max...

Kate goes back to look at the boats on the canal and to watch the light dancing on the water.
She looks at her map and wonders what to do.
She goes to de Pijp, the area of the city where Max's body is found.
De Pijp is at the other end of Amsterdam so Kate walks a little in a warm sunshine, then takes the tram.
When she gets there she walks around the streets for a while and through the market.
It is an interesting colourful place.
You can buy anything there: fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, eggs, cheese and flowers.
Holland is famous for its tulips of course, and the tulips here are lovely.
She passes from by the narrow street where Elly tells her they found Max.
At one end of it is a bigger street; at the other end is a park that is becoming more and more dangerous, Elly says.
There is only one apartment block on one side of the street.
Even in the sunshine, it looks sad and grey.
The police has put a rope around the area where Max was died to stop people go near it.
Kate feels cold as she looks at it.
She goes into a small cafe-bar on one corner of the market, sits at the bar and orders tea to warm herself cup.
There are only a few customers in the bar, mostly men who look like they work on the market.
The bar owner is a friendly guy with a big stomach and a red face.
He starts talking to Kate.
His English is quite good.Bar owner and Kate chat about this and that and then Kate says she hears about a murder here almost all the time.
Suddenly they both hear the vice near them.
Next to them is an old guy drinking jenever, the strong Dutch gin, and smoking a cigarette.
He is short and his skin is dark, like he works outside all of his life.
He has very little hair and when he smiles at Kate, she notices that he has just a few dark brown teeth.
All of them start to talk...

Kate gets a message from Bert, the old guy.she meets in Pijp.
He leaves his phone number.
It is late but she rings him from her room.
Bert is still at the bar.
Kate can hear people talking behind him and the sound of glasses.
Ben arrives at the hotel at 11.30,he looks a lot more drunk than Kate leaves him.
They go to a bar.
He orders jenever and Kate pays for it.
She puts the four hundred guilders in an envelope and puts it on the table.

r meeting with Tom Carson is at 10.00 on Tuesday morning at the Rotterdam City Football Club offices.

It is almost 8.30 when Kate arrives at the station and brings a ticket, some coffee and a croissant, and gets on the train.

Holland is such a small country that all the towns and cities are close to each other.

It takes just over the hour to get to Rotterdam, so Kate sits back in her seat and enjoys the view.

Flat green fields, flower farms and cows.

And of course, water. In Holland there is water everywhere.

It is hard to think about Max's death.

Before leaving Kate the night before, Elly warns Kate doesn't to get too involved.+

Kate becomes involved when Max Carson talks to her in the Queen's Head.

As Kate looks out of the window at the Dutch countryside, she thinks about what she reads about Rotterdam's match against Leiden.

She doesn't know much about football, but she always thinks about that match.

The train arrives at Rotterdam station.Rotterdam is very different from Amsterdam, and Kate sees the differences as soon as she reaches the train.

Rotterdam is just like any other modern city. with tall glass buildings and apartment blocks.

Kate thinks it's not as good as Amsterdam with its lovely old buildings and canals.

She meets Tom Carson at the club offices.

He is a slim grey-haired man of about fifty and he looks so much like Max, that Kate suddenly feels sad.+

Tom has the body of a sportsman.

He is a footballer and he still looks like he can kicks a ball around a field.+
