DID 2016-2017 Sharing Ideas

Topics students might discuss in 2016-2017
1. Let's go outside

Many children spend too much time in front of technology when not in school.

Find out how the outdoors and unstructured play can help their mind, body and spirit.

We spend a lot of time inside watching the world from computers, too

How to make us closer to nature?

2. Fight climate change eating less meat

Meat consumption is the leading cause of climate change.

Animal agriculture accounts for roughly half of global emissions.

On average, each American eats 275 pounds of meat a year, compared to the global average of 90 pounds per person (41 kg).

3. ACE
https://ourclimateourfuture.org/

Young people have the most to lose when it comes to climate change, and the most to gain by fighting it. ACE teaches them how to take control of their future.

ACE does two things best: First, we teach climate science that puts teenagers at the center of the story. Second, we give every student a chance to take action.

4. I'm an interpreter

What is interpretation and why does it matter?

If you help visitors learn about a place that’s important to you, you’re an interpreter!

Interpreters connect visitors to important natural, cultural, and historical resources at parks, nature centers, historical sites, aquariums, zoos, and anywhere that people come to learn about places. NAI defines as "a mission-based communication process that forges emotional and intellectual connections between the interests of the audience and the meanings inherent in the resource."

What does interpretation mean to you?
5. Man

This is one of the most disturbing, honest, and in some way inspiring animation films, as it depicts in the space of a few minutes the destruction we have wrought against ourselves and our planet in only the past few nanoseconds of biological time. AMAZING work by Steve Cutts.

What is your relationship to the natural world like?
6. The Forest

Antonia is a 12 year old girl. She often has daydreams, in which she wanders off into a magical far away forest, where she hides from the problems of the real world. One day, however, her father takes drastic measures and she has to face a decision.

Is your inner peace an utopian state until you have finally escaped the grip of the society and its rules? Or is affirmation a faster way to your personal luck?

And what are you supposed to do, if you have to answer these questions?
7. Chornobyl
Read the article below, watch the videos, and then answer these questions using complete sentences.

8.National Park Service

This month marks the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service, and Americans are celebrating at parks around the country. Part of this celebration is thanking the men and women who conserve these natural and cultural places. This Administration is honoring a National Park Service that cares for a park a little closer to home — the White House.
The National Park Service have been taking care of the White House grounds since the 1930s — all 18 acres of it, and many of these service members have been here for over 35 years.

9.This Will Revolutionize Education

Many technologies have promised to revolutionize education, but so far none has.
With that in mind, what could revolutionize education?
