Many inventions gave Americans new ways to spend their leisure time. In the 1920s families used to gather around their radios to hear broadcasts of news and music, as well as comedy shows, religious shows and programmes for children. In this period, many people first started going to the movies. But the movies in the 1920s were very different from the movies of today. They were filmed in black and white, and they were silent.

The movies of the1920s included westerns, love stories, adventures, and stories based on tales from the Bible. But the best-loved movies were comedies. For a while they offered only slapstick humour, in which people got into crazy car chases or hit each other in the face with pies. But then came a series of great comedies in which Charlie Chaplin played a character called "the Little Tramp"- a poor, shy unlucky little man who used to get into lots of trouble. I the twenties, people all over the world became familiar with "the Little Tramp" and loved him. He made them laugh but he never lost his dignity or sense of hope.
