Ben's presentation

Diana_Khrustaliova Oct 24, 2013
Hi, Ben!
Your presentation is challenging, and we've decided to discover the details about habitats in Ukraine. Since we have fall vacations in a day, we will post asap.
By the way, does your school specialize in Science?
Does your school organize trips to other countries?
Would you like to come to Ukraine?
There's a tradition in our Gymnasium to host students and teachers foreign countries in our families.
We'd be glad to meet you here in Kyiv.
Best wishes,
Diana and Stacey and 10-V
Kyiv, Ukraine

BenDeitsch Nov 15, 2013
Hello Diana and Stacey!
Thanks so much for complementing my presentation! Our school, Alexander Dawson, does not specialize in science, we do everything. Our school does take trips to other countries, we do immersion trips as well as class trips called "Winterims." I am going to France this winter to study France in WWI and WWII. I have always wanted to go to Ukraine, I hear it is beautiful, and after doing this project, I want to go even more!

Thanks,
Ben

Hi, Ben! Sorry we haven't answered you earlier!
We’ve interviewed our geography teacher and found out some interesting facts about Polissya. There’s a high level of ground waters and minerals place not deep in the ground. So, the ground waters consist many minerals. That’s why Polissya has rich and various flora and also many bogs.
One of the most important minerals in Polissya’s ground is peat. Peat is an antiseptic. During the Second World War there were battles in Polissya. When wounded soldiers fell on the ground and water with peat helped them to recover.

All the best,
Stacy

Period 1 Questions

Marianna_Khomeriki Oct 23, 2013
Hiiii, guys!
My name is Marianna Khomeriki, I'm the student of 11-B form and I want to give answers to some of your questions :)

Marianna_Khomeriki Oct 23, 2013
1. Hoverla is the highest and most climbed mountain of Ukraine. It's located in the Chornohora range. Between 15.000 and 17.000 people climb it every year and it's also a location for winter sports. The name Hoverla comes from "bovar" - the Hungarian word for snowy castle.
First hiking route on Hoverla was marked out in late nineteenth century by Leopold Wajgel.
If you want to climb at more than 2.000 metres, you don't need require mountaineering equipment, just good boots and happy mood ;) It can take 6 hours from the base to complete the 6 km climb. Also at the top of Hoverla there is a plateau. From there everyone can see for miles at Chornohora range and look down on the tops of lower mountains. Then you realise why Hoverla is so popular ;)
2. Since Kyiv is a big city and it's the capital of Ukraine, there are a lot of parks here. Also we have one big zoo in the center of Kyiv. There are a lot of exotic and wild animals such as zebras, horses, monkeys, parrots, crocodiles, cobras and others. Many people visit our zoo with their family, children or friends. Everyone will have so much fun there! ;)
I think that the most popular animals in Kyiv are squirrels. There are a lot of them in our parks, gardens and small forests.
3. Kyiv has a humid continental climate. The warmest months are June, July, and August, with mean temperatures of 13.8 to 24.8 °C. The coldest are December, January, and February, with mean temperatures of −4.6 to −1.1 °C. Snow cover Kyiv usually lies from mid-November to the end of March. I love our climat a lot ;)
4,5 I've already answered above.
6. Kyiv is situated of the hills and it's located on both sides of the Dnieper River, which flows south through the city towards the Black Sea. However, the city's unique landscape distinguishes it from the surrounding region.
Thanks for your attention and additional information ;)))
Best wishes,
Marianna,

Hi;)
1. There're Carpathian and Crimean mountains in Ukraine, they can be separate habitats.
2.In summer it is hot in Ukraine, about 25-35 degrees, and in winter – minus 5-25 degrees. The weather is unpredictable, one year in the end of April the weather is sunny, and the temperature – up to 20 degees. But last March we had a great snowfall. On 22-23 March, Kyiv was a big traffic jam, transport was unable to move. People, who were returning from work, spent up to 10-12 hours to get to their homes! Armoured vehicles were involved in rescuing operations.

Thank you all for your comments and information. Stasey, I love these video's. In one of them the cars are almost buried and you can hear the wind blowing. Those cars must have been stuck for a few days. In the other I love the "let it snow" soundtrack. I wonder how many people stuck in that traffic would have thought that was funny. It looks like our weather is pretty similar. I think we would be very comfortable visiting each others countries.
Cheers,
Mr. Meyers

Stasey_Chernega Oct 24, 2013
We've thought about visiting each other countries, too. Now we have an exchange with Germany, but we all want to visit the USA, and to show our country to you.
Best wishes!

Hi
That sounds a lot like Colorado. Here you can never tell what the weather will be. On some days we could have taken pictures of people in shorts, a t-shirt, and sandals next to a pile of snow!
Thanks

Hello everybody !
The weather in Ukraine is really unpredictable. And climat isn't very soft. In summer it is very hot usually nearly 27-37 degrees. And In winter it is -5 -10 degrees.
All the best.

Katia_Kovaliova Nov 29, 2013
Hi!
Weather in Ukraine unpredictable.
For example, last year the 23rd of March in Kiev fell terrible snow did not work trucks, and people could not get out of their homes.
This happened for the first time. But in general we are quite stable weather.
Winter snow and cold (temperature of about -10 or -15 degrees Celsius). Spring turns warm and dry closer to April (temperature 10 or 15 degrees Celsius). Summer is always hot (usually 20 or 30 degrees Celsius). Autumn rains (temperature 5 to 10 degrees Celsius).
Thanks,
best wishes,
Katia

Every year our Earth Science classes take a trip to Dinosaur Ridge in Morrison, Colorado. There are fossilized dinosaur footprints in the hillside. This year our theatre class decided to do skits using Dinosaur Ridge as the theme. We hope you enjoy them!

Here are some pictures of our field trip. We collected sediment to make paint when we returned to school.

Dinosaur Ridge trip

Sasha_Kuksa Nov 11, 2013
Dear American students,
We enjoyed watching your video.
For example: we saw how to make paints.
The drawings made by these paints look like in dinosaur time.
In our group we like the yellow colour most of all.
And we have known some more about Red Rocks theater.
It was really interesting to know more about Colorado!
We have searched more about Colorado on the Internet.
''Colorado is notable for its diverse geography, ranging from alpine mountains, arid plains and deserts with huge sand dunes, deep canyons, sandstone and granite rock formations, rivers, lakes, and lush forests.''
We have some questions:
1.What habitat is typical for Lafayette?
2.How far is Dinosaur Ridge from your school?
3.Is it scary to climb the Ridge?
4.Is it your first field trip to Dinosaur Ridge?
5.What flora and fauna can be found there?
6.Was it a one day trip?
7.What was the most interesting for you?
8.Have you a collection of the paintings and if yes where is it kept?
9.What size are dinosaurs footprints?
10.Are there a lot of them?
11.Where is the nearest natural museum and what can we see there?
We have a fascinating three floor natural museum in Kyiv.
We are waiting for your answers and your questions.
Best wishes,

Hallo!
I like your field trip because it is fantastic and I'd like to go hiking too.
I like wonderful places in Ukraine.
And your Dinosaur Ridge.
The theater in the red rocks is very exciting.
I have some questions for you.
How long did it take you to get to Dinosaur Ridge?
Did you have any problems with collecting sediment?
How does it feel to paint on rocks?

Zhenia_Mitrohina Nov 16, 2013
Hello!
I think your video is great! I have known a lot of interesting from your video.
This field trip is very great. Dinosaur Ridge is really beautiful place.
I want to visit it. I also want to do my own paints.
I want to paint on rocks, too.

Finn_Jones_43 Dec 5, 2013
Hi, I'm Finn from Colorado. To answer a few questions:
Dinosaur ridge wasn't too far away from our school. It took about 30 minutes for us to get there.
Climbing the ridge wasn't the scary part. Coming down was! The loose rocks were very slippery.
There were quite a few dinosaur footprints, and they were big, maybe a foot across (sorry I don't know how big that is in meters).
This was a one day trip. It wasn't my first time to dinosaur ridge, but it was for some people.
Lafayette doesn't touch the mountains, but it is close. The town where I live does touch the mountains, and it's about a 25 minute drive from our school. There are lots of farms and areas for animals to graze in Lafayette. Thanks for all the questions!
Recent floods in Colorado have left many people suffering. Our students have been effected and would like to share what it has been like to live through this disaster.
